A PAINLESS WAY TO JOIN THE RACING ELITE

IMAGINE the excitement of watching your own horse coming first in a classic race, as you sip your champagne in the member’s enclosure and decide how you are going to spend your share of the prize money.

No, not a pipedream. You can actually become a racehorse owner for as little as £250 which purchases a 5% share plus monthly fees which cover training, veterinary fees, blacksmith, transport, insurance, entry fees and jockey fees.  This is thanks to a scheme run by Lancashire businessman Mel Catlow and his wife Dorothy in the village of Cartmel, close to its' famous racecourse.

THIS IS HOW IT WORKS

Mel and Dorothy purchase the horse, which is obviously chosen with careful judgement. They then offer shares in the horse in percentages, normally 5% or 10%. Shareholders can take up the shares on either a one, two or three year basis and when the horse wins or is placed they receive a percentage of the prize money according to their size of holding.  If the horse is sold they also receive a percentage of the sale price.

THE BEGINNING OF A FAIRYTALE

Sporting Occasions Racing Partnerships were set up in July 2001 and have never looked back. There are now 12 partnerships and prize money achieved so far has reached more than £325,000.

A star performer has been Partners In Jazz, prize money achieved £138,833. Now in his sixth season, Partners In Jazz achieved his 5th win on New Year Day 2008, and is entered in the Lincoln handicap at Doncaster Saturday March 22nd.

The horses in the partnerships are all trained by specially selected trainers. A bonus for shareholders: free entry to owners’ and trainers’ facilities, entry to the paddock to see your horse prior to running, listen to the trainer instructing the jockey on how the horse should be ridden and hopefully entry into the winners enclosure.

MOVING FORWARD

The target for winners for 2008 is 15, so we have some to go.
